4. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS FOR STRUCTURES A,B,C: PART ONE OF THE EXPERIMENT

As in previous experiments subjects were periodically rotated during part one of the experiment so that each subject occupied each d and the c position. The results given in Table 1 were calculated in the following way. The average rate of coercive exploitation for each experimental group is the mean of the proportion of sanctions transmitted by all ds for that experiment and in all cases excludes the resources gained by the c through transmission of the con sanction. The number of negative sanctions transmitted is simply a count of c’s transmissions for each of the groups and includes both types of negative sanctions. Remember that the c always held two negative sanctions. Since each experiment had 24 trials, the maximum number of sanction transmissions possible for any experiment was 48. Finally the average coercion rate by type is simply the mean of the mean rates of coercion for the A, B and C structures. The numbering of the experimental groups is arbitrary. However, within each type, the groups have been arranged left to right from lowest to highest rate of coercive exploitation.
